about our structures

If you're in the market for a timber frame building or log cabin to turn into your home, addition, outbuilding, or business, this page is for you. Contact us for more information about any of the available structures, or to let us know of a specific size or type of structure you're looking for.

Timber frame and cabin prices are for the main structure only and include cleaning, drawings showing how parts fit together, and repair of observed structural problems using matching beams/logs and historically accurate techniques. While we do our best to examine standing structures, in some cases a problem can't be seen until the building is dismantled. This increases expenses, but we will keep the buyer informed and negotiate a fair solution. Our current rate for repairs is $56/man-hour.

Prices listed below do not include roofing, rafters, windows, doors, flooring, staircases, mantels, hardware, trim, stone foundation, etc. unless noted in the description.  If any of these items are available to purchase separately it will be noted in the description and these items will be discounted 25% from the normal retail value.

For an additional charge, the Barn & Cabin Friend can deliver your structure and erect it, no matter where your property is.  We can also advise your contractors about the foundation needed, or about special considerations in finishing your unusual structure.  Typically timber frame barns that will be climate-controlled are enclosed within SIPs (structurally insulated panels) for an energy-efficient building envelope and a view of all the posts and beams on the inside.

In some cases we can serve as general contractor for foundation, roofing, insulation, powder post beetle control, and chinking (for cabins). Depending on your area we may be able to recommend other contractors who can take your project to completion.

Watertown House

We couldn't pass up the chance to get involved with this cool piece of early American history.  This 1782 Connecticut home was carefully disassembled and moved to the Cincinnati area in the 1950's.  Now it's ready for its third chapter of life.  For a very old home, it's got high ceilings on the ground floor and a spacious layout that could easily be married to an open concept addition on the back.  All the beams are hand-hewn but some are so smooth you'd think they were sawn.  The joinery is remarkable and many of the original details like doors and hardware can be included. A rare find. Price: please call for price and more photos.

jackson barn

This barn is 45' x 26' and has hand hewn 9 x 9 posts. It measures 16’ to the eave and 22’ to the roof peak.  Its unusual features include an 18” swing beam and 3” dovetail tie beam joints.  Its hand hewn braces and rafters date it to roughly 1830-1840.  Price: please call.

Wilburforce Barn

This 45' x 60' barn comes with its 24' x 12' timber frame wagon shed which covers the ramp to the front two doors.
It has all hand hewn beams with 45 foot long tie beams. The posts and main members of the frame measure 10" x 10." Unusual features include eight gunstock posts which terminate in English tying joints (a type of joint that locks together three structural members: plate, tie beam, and post). Price: please call.

Newark barn

This barn is 36' x 50' with really tall (20') walls.  This is a very heavy timbered, hand hewn frame with 12' x 12' posts and tie beams that are 12' x 13' and 36’ long. The unusual major/minor roofing system features a 5-sided hewn ridge beam. This frame is missing one corner but there are enough beams in the basement to recreate the corner.

This sturdy sawn oak frame measures 28' x 33'2" and features a 10' ceiling on the first floor.  The partitions flanking the main aisle could easily be removed to create an open floor plan downstairs, and the upstairs would make quite a bedroom retreat with its cathedral ceilings.

hand-hewn house frame (UPDATE: SOLD)

Our plan was just to salvage old beams from this farmhouse with a plain exterior. But when we started tearing off plaster we noticed something remarkable:  every single framing piece is hand-hewn. That dates this structure to no later than the 1820s, before sawmills were established in Southern Ohio. The structure is now tagged and dismantled and ready for a buyer with the vision to turn it into a home of distinction. The interior can be opened up and the exterior can be clad with structural insulated panels so the fine craftsmanship is visible throughout.  We can rebuild on your site.   Dimensions:  18 x 28 feet.

rocky fork barn (Update: Sold)

60x36 hand hewn barn.  This barn has some really unique characteristics  1. Heavy timbered,  it has 12X12 hand hewn posts that create a lot of open areas inside of the barn.  2.  It has an unusual plate system with a girt directly below the plate in which the braces are held.  3.  Really well done scarf joints to join the plates.  This frame would make an excellent barn-home conversion.

Hutchinson Barn (UPDATE: SOLD)

This barn has a smaller footprint that would adapt well into a home or a garage/workshop. it is 42 feet wide and 26 feet deep with lofts on both sides.  There are 4 bents with the bays spaced at 14'-12'-16'.  It is 15'8" to the eave, 20' to the purlin posts and 25' to the peak.  This barn has sawn beams and was probably built in the early 1900s.  The price for this frame is $31,000.  This includes all of the framing members fixed, cleaned, and ready to put back up.

HAND-HEWN lynchburg corn crib (Update: sold)

This is a large, early 1800's hand-hewn corn crib.  This structure would make a great room addition for an existing house or a small cabin or hunting lodge.  The size could be changed and the interior beams could be removed for an open floor plan.

Hand-Hewn Cuba Barn (UPDATE: SOLD)

This barn is 48' wide and 50' deep, with bents spaced 12' apart.  It has massive 10" x 10" hand hewn posts.  There's a swing beam on the second bent from the left, which makes the center section 24' wide, and means this barn only has 4 interior posts.  With so much open space, this barn would make a great event center.  The barn is 12' high to the eave, 19' to the purlins, and 26'6'' to the peak. Dates to 1850-1870.  The barn is still standing and you can visit it for an inspection.  It has been well protected with wood and metal siding.  The price for this frame is $46,000. This includes us carefully dismantling the frame, taking it back to our shop, and fixing or replacing any broken timbers using traditional timber framing techniques.  This also includes all the framing members, posts, plates, braces, etc. and all of the rafters carefully wire brushed and cleaned.  The barn will be ready to put right back up on your foundation.

20 x 14 early hand-hewn frame

Small frame found in the center of Jeffersonville, Ohio.  Locals told us that is was one of the first buildings in the town.  This structure would make a great outdoor shelter house or hunting lodge, or it could be added on to an existing house for an amazing dining room or bedroom.  Price is $7500 which includes all of the framing members and rafters.  Just like all of our buildings it is tagged and well documented and we would love to be the company that puts this historic structure back up on your property.

bodman barn (update: sold)

This is truly a unique barn.  It is 48 X 36 and all hand hewn. It's in phenomenal shape for its age and it has "marriage marks" which are roman numerals carved on the joints so the original carpenter would know how the barn goes up once all of the pieces were made.  This massive structure could have 3 levels of floors.  it is hard to see in the picture because of the tobacco rails that criss cross the structure.  This barn is still standing and is available to tour.  Price for the complete frame tagged and ready to reassemble is $26,000.

This 56 X 40 foot barn has a gem inside:  an 1800's hand-hewn frame measuring 44 x 22 feet.  The original structure is in top notch condition, having been completely protected by the surrounding additions.  We will take off the exterior and tag and document the original frame.  This barn would be an excellent candidate for a barn home conversion.  It will be available later this year and can be viewed while still standing.  Call for price. UPDATE:  this barn is slated to become a house only miles away from where it came down.  (We love it when we can keep local history local!)
